Braille to help the visually impaired understand Durga Puja themes

September 26, 2022 | < 1 min read

To make the celebrations more inclusive, a few Durga Pujas in Kolkata have decided to instal Braille boards at their pandals. It’s the age of theme-based pandals for Durga Puja, especially in Kolkata, and these Puja organisers want everyone, even the visually impaired, to understand the themes.

Three organisers are installing the boards for the first time—Hazra Park Sarbojonin Durgotsav Committee, State Bank Park in Thakurpukur and Young Boys Club in Chitpur. Other than these, a Braille board will be seen at Shiv Mandir Sarbajanin Durgotsav on Lake Temple Road in south Kolkata, for the fifth consecutive year.

The boards will be located outside the pandals. “Braille watch, Braille calculator and Braille thermometer have been developed to help the visually impaired in their daily activities. It is now time to make them participate in Bengal’s biggest festival,” Partha Ghosh of Shiv Mandir Sarbojonin Durgotsav told indianexpress.com.

“During Durga puja when everybody wants to have fun, we decided to enable the visually challenged people to soak themselves in the festival spirit,” joint secretary of Hazra Park Sarbojonin Durgotsav Committee, Sayan Deb Chatterjee said.
