The BJP, in its manifesto for the 2024 general election released by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 14, has omitted the inclusion of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), a significant departure from its manifesto for the 2019 general election where it was prominently featured.

However, the 2024 manifesto highlights the commitment to the implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).

The manifesto states, “We have taken the historic step of enacting the Citizenship Amendment Act [CAA] and will implement it to confer citizenship to all eligible persons.”

In the 2019 manifesto, the party emphasised the urgent need for the NRC, citing concerns over the cultural and linguistic identity of certain areas being impacted by illegal immigration, leading to adverse effects on the livelihood and employment opportunities of local residents.

It further stated, “We will expeditiously complete the NRC process in these areas on priority. In the future, we will implement the NRC in a phased manner in other parts of the country.”
