April 6, 2024 | < 1 min read

The Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has set its sights on commencing the construction of Rabindra Bhavan, on a 2.5-acre plot opposite Central Park in Salt Lake, Kolkata, within the current year.

The foundational piling work has been completed, in line with the initial blueprint which outlined a two-storey structure housing a meeting hall, library, archive, auditorium and conference hall.

The authorities are in the process of engaging a suitable agency to undertake the construction of the ground and first floors of the edifice, with an estimated cost hovering around Rs 3.6 crore.

The foundation stone was laid in 2010, but the project encountered delays due to various reasons. Efforts to revive it were made following the establishment of the BMC in 2015.

The auditorium, the centrepiece of the structure, has been planned as a venue for hosting plays scripted by Tagore and for a variety of musical performances. Additionally, dedicated art galleries, exhibition rooms and a library showcasing Tagore’s literary works will be built.

Provisions will also be there for scholars to engage in research activities within the premises.
