10 more Suto Hubs in Bengal
The Bengal government is setting up 10 more Suto Hubs to help weavers procure threads at fixed prices, to bring down their production cost and in turn, the cost for customers
To help weavers of Bengal avoid exorbitant prices during procurement of threads, the state government has decided to set up 10 Suto Hubs (‘thread hubs’) across Bengal.
The Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises and Textiles (MSME&T) Department is implementing this initiative, through which it will procure the threads and distribute them among weavers from the hubs at fixed prices.
In the initial phase, two hubs are coming up—at Purbasthali in East Burdwan district, which is nearing completion, and in Cooch Behar.
In the next phase, the MSME&T Department will set up eight more hubs.
This initiative will nullify all scope for middlemen to control the rates of the raw materials, which will in turn reduce the production costs for weavers. A reduced production cost will eventually help weavers fetch more profit as well as keep a competitive price for their goods.
