The average debt or outstanding loan per farmer family in Bengal is much below the national average as well as those in BJP-ruled states

Farmer families in Bengal have the lowest average debt compared to those in other Indian states, shows data released by the Union government.

Not only that, all the major states with the so-called ‘double-engine governments’ of the BJP in place have fared poorly. These are the states more often than not held up as ideals in every aspect by leaders of the ruling party at the Centre.

According to the ‘Situation Assessment of Households and Land and Livestock Holdings of Households in Rural India, 2019’ report, released recently by the National Statistical Office (NSO), while the average amount of outstanding loan per agricultural household, that is, average debt per farmer family, nationally is Rs, 74,121, in Bengal, it is only Rs 26,452.

All BJP-ruled states have higher average debts per farmer: Rs 1,82,922 for Haryana, Rs 1,26,240 for Karnataka, Rs 85,825 for Himachal Pradesh, Rs 74,420 for Madhya Pradesh, Rs 56,568 for Gujarat, Rs 51,107 for Uttar Pradesh and Rs 48,338 for Uttarakhand.
