India won a hard-fought match against Spain on Thursday to claim the bronze medal in men’s hockey in the Paris Olympics.

The 2-1 win also meant that for the first time since the 1972 Munich Olympics, India won medals in hockey in two consecutive Olympic Games. Both the 1968 and 1972 medals were also silvers.

The final was also goalkeeper PR Sreejesh’s final match of his career. He had already announced his retirement.

He played a stellar role in the match, saving multiple shots and penalty corners, the same way as in the quarter-final against Great Britain, in which match he had saved two tie-breaker penalty strokes as well, which was the reason India won.
