The Kolkata Metro Railway is set to implement a digital payment mode for commuters along its corridor linking the city with Howrah Railway Station. A Unified Payments Interface (UPI)-based ticketing system will be rolled out in the East-West Metro corridor, also known as the Green Line.

With the introduction of this system, commuters will no longer need to provide exact change at ticket counters. The Kolkata Metro Railway is spearheading the implementation of this UPI-based ticketing system in collaboration with the State Bank of India and the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS).

The Metro Railway general manager conducted a trial of the new payment mechanism at Sealdah metro station personally purchasing a ticket using the system on Tuesday.

To utilise this feature, commuters will need to specify their destination station and scan the QR code displayed on a board at the ticket counters, completing the payment process using their smartphones.

Upon successful completion of the trial, this ticketing system will be implemented across the entire East-West Metro (Green Line). The system will be introduced on the other lines (Kavi Subhas-Dakshineswar, Kavi Subhas-Hemanta Mukhopadhyay and Joka-Majerhat) in phases.
