Fifty-five days after the attack on Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials by his supporters, the absconding Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan was arrested by the Bengal Police early Thursday (February 29) morning.

He was presented before the Basirhat Court, which sent him to 10 days’ police custody.

Shahjahan has been accused in several cases of sexual assault and land grab in Sandeshkhali village in the Basirhat division of North 24 Parganas district.

Significantly, the arrest comes just three days after the Calcutta High Court said that the state police has the authority to arrest him. Since the original order for Sheikh Shahjahan’s arrest was with the ED, a Union government agency, the Bengal Police had prayed for permission from the court to arrest him.
