Suvendu calls IPS officer ‘Khalistani’ at Sandeshkhali
On Tuesday, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee posted a video on her X (formerly Twitter) account depicting a police officer from her state accusing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members of labelling him a ‘Khalistani’.
It has been reported that Leader of Opposition in the Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari called Indian Police Service (IPS) Jaspreet Singh a separatist; ADG (South Bengal) Supratim Sarkar gave statement to the press on this account.
As seen in the video, Jaspreet Singh, the IPS officer deployed at Dhamakhali to prevent Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari from visiting the tumultuous Sandeshkhali area in North 24 Parganas district, became upset when a group of activists from the saffron party allegedly taunted him by calling him a ‘Khalistani’.
“I will take action against this. Just because I wear a turban, you are making this accusation. If I weren’t wearing a turban, would you still call me a Khalistani? You cannot make such remarks about my religion,” he can be heard saying.
Earlier in the day, the police had halted Adhikari’s march to Sandeshkhali, citing the imposition of prohibitory orders and the state government’s appeal to a division bench of Calcutta High Court against a single bench ruling on Monday, which allowed Suvendu Adhikari to visit the area of unrest.
