Bengal to get a semiconductor policy, announces minister
Bengal is in the process of formulating a policy aimed at promoting the manufacturing and designing of semiconductors, and talent development in that area.
The state’s Information Technology and Electronics Minister Babul Supriyo made this announcement in his speech at the inauguration of the 37th International Conference of VLSI Design and the 23rd International Conference on Embedded Systems on January 8 in Kolkata, organised by the VLSI Society of India (VSI).
He also said the semiconductor sector has the potential to generate 10,000 jobs every year.
The minister highlighted the high demand for the state’s 22 information technology (IT) parks, saying 17 were nearly fully occupied, encouraging individuals to establish their industry presence in the region. He assured the state government’s support in creating the necessary infrastructure.
VSI President Dr Satya Gupta informed the audience that it was collaborating with the government on formulating the policy, with the policy to take leaves out of those in operation in Gujarat, Odisha and Tamil Nadu.
The Union government already has a semiconductor policy in place since December 2021, as per which it provides up to 50 per cent of the project cost for two semiconductor fabs and two display fabs.
