A superb strike by Dimitri Petratos in the 71st minute brought Mohun Bagan Super Giant victory against East Bengal FC in the Durand Cup final on Sunday (September 3). This was sweet also because the Mariners were playing with 10 men, having lost Anirudh Thapa in the 62nd minute for a second yellow-card offence.

Besides defeating its arch-rivals, that too after 19 long years, this 17th victory in a Durand Cup final also ensured that Mohun Bagan went one-up to become the club with the highest number of wins.

The last time they met in the final, in 2004, East Bengal recorded a 2-1 win at the Ambedkar Stadium in Delhi to equal its opponent’s tally of 16 titles. So, neither of the giants won the trophy in all these years.
