Nagendra Rai, better known as Ananta Maharaj alias Ananta Rai, will be the BJP candidate for Rajya Sabha from Bengal.

Maharaj is a controversial figure for heading a faction of the Greater Cooch Behar Peoples’ Association which is demanding a separate Kamtapur state or Union territory for the Rajbanshis of the Cooch Behar region.

With 70 MLAs in the assembly (seven having left the party), the BJP will be able to elect one MP from the state.

Maharaj will replace Congress’ Pradip Bhattacharya, who is retiring. With no MLAs, Congress would not be able to send anyone to the Council of States.

The Greater Cooch Behar People’s Association has been demanding a separate state or Union territory for people belonging to the Koch-Rajbanshi community.
