IIT-Madras, Chennai will set up a campus in Zanzibar, Tanzania, which will be the overseas campus of any Indian Institute of Technology. Programmes will be offered at the campus from October.

The agreement to set up a campus of the premier institution, part of a network considered to be among the world’s top technical institutes, was signed on Wednesday between the education ministries of India and Zanzibar-Tanzania in Zanzibar.

Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous region of Tanzania. It is an archipelago off the coast of east Africa that united with Tanganyika in 1964 to form the United Republic of Tanzania.

IIT-Madras will decide the pedagogical strategies and admission criteria, and confer the degrees while the capital and operating expenditure will be met by the government of Zanzibar-Tanzania, said a senior official of India’s education ministry.
