Google Lens’s DermAssist can help identify skin conditions

June 18, 2023 | 2 min read

Google Lens’s incredible new feature, DermAssist helps search skin conditions using pictures of those conditions, which can be a big help as describing medical conditions can often be difficult for those who are not doctors. The results will help people decide if a visit to a doctor is the need of the hour.

“Describing an odd mole or rash on your skin can be hard to do with words alone,” rightly says a blog post by Lou Wang, Senior Director of Product Management for Google Search, which then goes on to provide the solution: “Just take a picture or upload a photo through Lens, and you’ll find visual matches to inform your search. This feature also works if you’re not sure how to describe something else on your body, like a bump on your lip, a line on your nails or hair loss on your head.”

This is DermAssist, the latest incredible feature for one of its most popular Android applications, Google Lens.

Another blog post on Google Health explains how comprehensive DermAssist can be: “Trained using millions of skin images, DermAssist can identify more than 90 percent of the most commonly searched-for skin conditions, and research demonstrates that the underlying technology can help clinicians better identify skin conditions across all populations.”

The post puts in big font that DermAssist “identifies 288 skin, hair, and nail conditions”, for the “2 billion people around the world” who have such conditions.

Thus, this feature can also help people decide if they need to visit a doctor; and an early visit can lead to an early cure.
