Describing Kolkata as a “vital bridge” for the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) countries, Indian Chamber of Commerce president Mehul Mohanka said Kolkata was rapidly emerging as a “connected capital” of nations.

“Kolkata is rapidly emerging as a connected capital for the BIMSTEC region. The city is strategically well-positioned … It brings together more than 1.7 billion people and has a combined GDP of about $3 trillion,” he said, while delivering the welcome address of the two-day BIMSTEC Business Conclave.

The meet, which kicked off in Kolkata on Tuesday, was attended by ministers of the representative nations, including Bengal’s Shashi Panja.
