The only Congress MLA in the Bengal Assembly, Sagardighi legislator Bayron Biswas joined the Trinamool Congress today in the presence of the latter’s national general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee. While Banerjee refuted charges of poaching, saying Bayron joined the party as he felt on the Trinamool is fighting the BJP in the state, the latter said that Congress had no role in his by-election victory and that the Congress in Bengal is “averse” to fighting the saffron camp.

In a jolt to the Congress, nearly three months after winning the minority-dominated constituency of Sagardighi in a by-election, Bayron Biswas, the party’s lone MLA in Bengal, who is known as a beedi baron in the area, joined the ruling Trinamool Congress in the Ghatal area in Paschim Medinipur district, in the presence of the latter’s national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee

Welcoming him to the party, Trinamool tweeted: “To strengthen your resolve to fight against the divisive and discriminatory politics of BJP, you have chosen the right platform. Together, we will win!”

The switching over of parties came amidst Trinamool’s ongoing mass outreach campaign, ‘Trinamooler Nabo Jowar’ (New Wave of Trinamool).

Refuting allegations of poaching Congress leaders, Abhsihek Banerjee said at the joining ceremony that “Biswas wanted to join us as he felt that only we fought against the BJP in Bengal”. He also said the Congress “can’t claim that they are fighting against the BJP at the Centre by opposing the TMC in Bengal. This double standard has to stop”.

On joining, Biswas said the Congress had “no role in his victory” in the by-election, which happened because of his “goodwill”, adding the Congress in Bengal is “averse” to fighting the saffron camp.
