IPL for environment: 500 trees for every play-off dot ball

May 25, 2023 | < 1 min read

In a unique gesture towards the environment, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has decided, in partnership with the Tata Group, to plant 500 saplings for each dot ball (that is, a ball against which no runs are scored) bowled in the three play-offs—one qualifier and two eliminators.

Announcing this decision in a tweet, BCCI secretary Jay Shah said 42,000 saplings have already been decided upon, based on the 84 dot balls bowled in the Gujarat Titans versus Chennai Super Kings match last Tuesday, classified as Qualifier 1, and which was the first play-off.

A hashtag ‘#TATAIPLGreenDots’ has been created to support this initiative and it is already trending on Twitter and Facebook. Tata is the sponsor of the IPL.
