Bengal’s draft voter draft list sees removal of 12,000+ names

November 10, 2022 | < 1 min read

Over 12,000 names were removed from the draft list of voters for the 2023 panchayat elections in Bengal, published by the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday, November 9.

According to a source at the ECI, many of the names removed were of “ghost voters”, that is, they simply don’t exist, and therefore, the names were included wrongfully. Plus, the names of those who died were removed, which also contributed to the reduction.

While the voter list published by the ECI in January 2022 contained 7,43,00,810 names, that being readied for the 2023 panchayat election contains 7,42,88,233, which is less by 12,577.

After the draft is published, corrections would start, which would continue till December 8. The final list would be published on January 5.
