Jhulan Goswami retires

September 25, 2022 | < 1 min read

Jhulan Goswami retired from international cricket after the third and last ODI against England at Lord’s on Saturday. It was a remarkable career for the ‘Chakdah Express’, as she was nicknamed, hailing from that small town of Bengal.

In a 20-year career, she accumulated numerous records. Though she got almost everything she wanted, one big regret remained, as he said on the eve of her retirement: never winning an ODI World Cup, despite having played in two finals—in 2015 and 2017.

And her best moment? “My best memory is when I got the India cap and bowled the first over because I never imagined [that I will play for India]. The journey was difficult as I had to travel for two-and-a-half hours by local train one way every day for training,” she recollected.

The dream for a cricketing career, as she also said, was fuelled by watching the final of the 1997 Women’s World Cup at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, in which match she was a ball girl. “In 1997, I was a ball girl at the Eden Gardens where I saw my first women’s World Cup final. From that day, my dream was to represent India.”
