Bengal’s GST collections for October beats national average, far ahead of other BJP-ruled States

With a year-on-year rise in gross GST revenue by about 15 per cent in October, Bengal has beaten five BJP-ruled states—Assam (14 per cent), Uttarakhand (10 per cent), Uttar Pradesh (7 per cent), Tripura (5 per cent) and Himachal Pradesh (3 per cent).

While the gross GST revenue in October 2019 was Rs 3,263 crore, it rose to Rs 3,738 in October 2020, as per data released by the Central government.

In fact, not just these five, Bengal has beaten a total of 16 states in terms of percentage rise in GST revenue.

October is the second consecutive month when there has been a year-on-year increase in GST revenue in  Bengal—in September, the rise was by 4 per cent approximately.

In fact, the gross GST revenue of the state has seen a steady climb over the last four months. It was Rs 3,010 crore in July, Rs 3,053 crore in August, Rs 3,393 crore in September and in October, Rs 3,738 crore, as already mentioned.

These numbers bode well for the state’s future. The various additional measures that the state government has taken over the last few months, since the lockdown started (and continues to take), are beginning to show their effect.

The gross GST revenue collection by the Central government (the sum of that of all states and territories) for October 2020 by the Central government is Rs 1,05,155crore, of which CGST is Rs 19,193 crore, SGST is Rs 25,411 crore, IGST is Rs 52,540 crore (including Rs 233.75 crore collected on import of goods) and Cess is Rs 8,011 crore (including Rs 932 crore collected on import of goods).
