The number was 23. After yesterday’s announcement by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the number has become 30. This is soon to be the number of districts in Bengal.

At the press conference, she told reporters that the cabinet had endorsed the decision earlier during the day. According to sources in the state administration, the decision to create smaller districts was the result of a desire to streamline the administrative system.

Bishnupur, Berhampore, Kandi, Ichamati, Ranaghat, Bashirhat and Sunderbans will be the seven new districts, to be carved out of the five districts of Bankura (Bishnupur), Murshidabad (Berhampore and Kandi), Nadia (Ichamati and Ranaghat), North 24 Parganas (Bashirhat) and South 24 Parganas (Sunderbans).

Earlier, the Trinamool Congress government had separated Kalimpong from Darjeeling and Jhargram from West Medinipur, and split Bardhaman into East Bardhaman and West Bardhaman.
