CMIE says 66 lakh professional white-collar jobs lost between May to August

The Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) said that between May and August, an estimated 66 lakh white-collar professional jobs, including teachers and engineers were lost, bringing it to the lowest point since 2016. Also nearly 50 lakh blue-collar industrial jobs were lost during the same period.

This has led to wiping out all the gains made in the last few years. The CMIE weekly analysis based on the data from the 20th wave of CMIE’s Consumer Pyramids Household Survey said that the white-collar employed were the most affected, which included high-paying jobs like software engineers to physicians, teachers or accountants.

The next big loss was for industrial workers, of whom, nearly 26% lost their jobs. The CMIE had previously said that nearly 1.21 crore jobs were lost in April.
