Study shows Bengal leads in government-aided education

According to a report published by the Central Square Foundation, drawing on data from the Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE) for 2019, the number of students studying in government schools from classes 1 to 12 is 131 million, which is slightly more than half of the total number of students in the country.

Therefore, about half of the country’s students attend private schools, which is blot on the government education system.

However, even in this worrying situation, Bengal stands out as an exception, because here, out of 1,60,73,254 students, only 15,07,354 go to private schools which is only 8.7% of the total.

The state has 1,45,65,900 students in government and government-aided schools, which is 85.7% of the total.

The government of Bengal has fulfilled its responsibility in facilitating universal education in the state. Schemes like Kanyashree and Sabooj Sathi, distribution of free school bags, uniforms and shoes, scholarships, etc. have ensured that students regularly attend schools. Therefore, education in Bengal is not limited to any particular strata of society.
