Crimes against women increased by 46% in a year, Uttar Pradesh tops the chart

Crimes against women in the country have risen by a staggering 46 per cent since last year. The National Commission for Women (NCW) said that 19,953 complaints of crimes against women were registered between January and August 2021. During the same period last year, the number stood at 13,615.

July also saw the highest number of complaints being registered in a month since 2015, when 3,248 cases were recorded.

The NCW has informed that more than half of these cases hail from Uttar Pradesh. Uttar Pradesh tops the charts among all states and union territories with 10,084 cases.

Delhi ranks second with 2147 instances. Another BJP-ruled state, Haryana, ranks third, with 995 cases and Maharashtra is on number four with 974 complaints.

Out of the total number of cases across the country, more than 7000 women have demanded for their right to live with dignity. While 4,000 have lodged complaints against domestic violence, nearly 3000 have notified the police against dowry-related violence and marital violence. More than 1000 complaints have been lodged against molestation, and 585 complaints pertain to rape and attempt to rape.
