The Bengal government’s bid to curb pollution by introducing more and more eco-friendly electric buses has been lauded by environmental experts. The initiative was praised at the 14th edition of the Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Environment and Energy Conclave held in Kolkata last July.

The conclave was attended by the consul generals of Italy and Australia in Kolkata, Dr Gianluca Rubagotti and Rowan Ainsworth, respectively, Suresh Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Power, Bengal, Manjeev Singh Puri, former board member of the Asia-Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate and currently on the advisory board of The Energy Resources Institute, and others.

The state government has planned for a systematic introduction of 5,000 electric power-driven buses in Kolkata and electrification of all the ferries plying the Ganga, along the city, by 2030, a project which won a prize for being one of the world’s seven best climate projects.

This project for a green, carbon emission-free mobility system won the prestigious C40 Award in 2019, at the C40 World Mayor Summit.
