70K+ passengers on day 1 of underwater Kolkata Metro

The metro section linking Howrah Maidan to Esplanade boasts India’s first underwater transportation tunnel, which is located below the Hooghly river. The first day of the commercial service of the section, which is part of the east-west route of Kolkata Metro, on March 15 saw a huge turnout of over 70,000 passengers. It was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 6.

According to officials, the 4.8 km underground route witnessed a total of 70,204 passengers on the day, with 23,444 boarding at Howrah Maidan Station and 20,923 at Howrah Station, which holds the distinction of being India’s deepest metro station.

Additionally, Mahakaran and Esplanade stations recorded 13,453 and 12,384 originating passengers, respectively, contributing to the successful launch.
