FIR against BJP’s Yediyurappa for sexually assaulting minor
An FIR has been registered against former Karnataka chief minister BS Yediyurappa for alleged sexual assault on a minor girl. The case against the BJP politician, filed under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 (POCSO) and Section 354(a) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), was lodged at the Sadashivanagar Police Station in Bengaluru on Thursday night.
The incident occurred on February 2, 2024, when the 17-year-old girl, accompanied by her mother, visited Yediyurappa seeking assistance regarding another rape case. The mother lodged a sexual harassment complaint against the 81-year-old with the police on Thursday evening, resulting in the registration of the POCSO case after midnight.
As per the FIR, the victim sought the BJP leader’s help regarding another alleged sexual assault. It alleges that Yediyurappa sexually assaulted the victim after forcibly taking her into a room. Upon fleeing the room, the victim disclosed the alleged assault to her mother.
Under current legislation, the punishment for penetrative sexual assault entails imprisonment of not less than 10 years, extendable to life imprisonment. If the victim is below 16 years of age, the penalty increases to a minimum of 20 years imprisonment, potentially extending to life imprisonment.
