The Urban Development and Municipal Affairs (UD&MA) Department of the Bengal government has allocated Rs 2.9 crore to the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) for the replacement of high-pressure sodium vapor lights with LED lights and the repair of faulty cable lines along the stretch of the EM Bypass from the Kamalgazi flyover end to Padmapukur More, towards Baruipur.

Officials said the chosen agency for the project will be responsible for overseeing the entire installation and the contract will be valid for one year.

Officials further highlighted that, as part of the Green City Mission scheme, the state government is providing financial assistance to urban local bodies for the installation of LED lights in their respective areas.

Kolkata Municipal Corporation, Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation, New Town Kolkata Development Authority and other civic bodies are actively transitioning from the old sodium vapor lights to LED lights.

Additionally, just last week, the UD&MA) Department approved a fund of approximately Rs 1 crore for the installation of LED street lights in six wards of the Howrah Municipal Corporation.
