The Election Commission of India issued a notice today (January 29) for the elections to 56 seats in the Rajya Sabha from 15 states, including five from Bengal. The elections will be held on Tuesday, February 27.

The seats will fall vacant in April, when these MPs will retire (50 MPs on April 2, including the five from Bengal, and six on April 3). But since the general election will be taking place in April, the elections for the MPs have been brought forward.

Those retiring from Bengal are Abir Ranjan Biswas, Subhasish Chakraborty, Mohammed Nadimul Haque and Santanu Sen, all from Trinamool Congress, and Congress’s Abhishek Manu Singhvi.

Rajya Sabha members are elected by the elected members of state legislative assemblies using a method of proportional representation. Therefore, the elections take place in the state assemblies.
