Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her party, the Awami League, secured their fourth consecutive and fifth overall term in the January 7 general election, as the primary opposition, led by Khaleda Zia’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), chose to boycott the polls.

Although the counting process is ongoing, the ruling Awami League has claimed victory in 200 out of the 300 seats in Parliament, according to PTI.

The elections recorded a relatively low voter turnout of 40 per cent; a turnout of 80 per cent was recorded in the last elections.

The region experienced episodes of political turmoil ahead of the general election, including incidents where polling stations were set on fire before voting. Furthermore, four individuals, including two children, lost their lives in a train fire related to arson.

Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as well as Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Sheikh Hasina on her stupendous victory through messages on the platform, X.
