Police in Pune, Maharashtra, announced on Saturday that they have filed a complaint against a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA for allegedly striking an on-duty police constable.

A video circulating on social media captured the incident that took place at Sassoon General Hospital on Friday, depicting Sunil Kamble, the legislator representing the Pune Cantonment constituency, hitting an on-duty constable.

An official stated that, based on the constable’s complaint, a case has been lodged against Kamble under Section 353 of the Indian Penal Code, which pertains to assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from performing their duty. The incident occurred during a programme held at Sassoon General Hospital, where Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar was also in attendance.

Sachin Pawar, a police sub-inspector associated with the Bund Garden police station, conveyed that the complaint had been filed by police officer Sarag, who was assigned VIP duty for the event.

“I positioned myself on the right side of the stage to ensure the safety of VIPs while they descended from the stage. While MLA Kamble was descending, he tripped, and I attempted to assist him. However, despite presenting my identity card, he struck me. Upon informing Kamble of my status as a policeman, he responded, ‘So what should I do,’” Sarag stated in his complaint.

Dismissing the accusations, Kamble stated, “I did not engage in any assault. While I was descending the steps, someone obstructed my path. I pushed that person aside and continued forward.”
