The firecracker market or ‘baji bazaar’ at Maidan in Kolkata, organised by the Burrabazar Fireworks Dealers’ Association, is back after three years. The COVID-19 pandemic had put a stop to this.

This time only green, or environment-friendly firecrackers are being sold. These are made with less harmful chemicals and produce less smoke and noise.

Packets of all such firecrackers have a QR code on them, scanning which reveals relevant details like the names of the chemicals used and their amounts, the name and address of the manufacturer, as well as a certificate from the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI).

Scanning the QR code is only way to know whether a packet of firecrackers is green or not.

According to reports, the sellers themselves are also randomly checking the authenticity of the packets by scanning the QR codes.

The special market, consisting of 30 stalls, will remain open from 10 am to 10 pm every day till November 12, the day of Kali Puja and Diwali.
