Jailed Iranian women’s rights activist Narges Mohammadi has been awarded the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize “for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all”, as stated by the Norwegian Nobel Committee in its citation.

The Nobel Peace Prize is the only Nobel Prize given by Norway, the others being given by Sweden.

Mohammadi is currently serving a 16-year sentence, which began in 2015, in Evin House of Detention in Iran under the charge of “spreading anti-state propaganda”.

She is only the second Iranian, and also the second Iranian woman, after Shirin Ebadi in 2023, to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
