Disney could sell Star Plus, and Reliance could be the buyer
Loss-making American entertainment giant Disney, in a bid to pare down losses, could sell off its South Asia-centric sports broadcaster and streamer Star Plus, or enter into a joint venture for infusing funds.
According to the Wall Street Journal, talks are at an early stage, though.
Reliance reportedly has a strong chance, either to become a JV partner or to buy the company entirely.
Whatever it does, it will be a win-win situation for Reliance. Its JioCinema already holds the streaming rights for the lucrative Indian Premier League. Star Sports lost in the bidding last year but still holds the TV rights for four more years.
So be it JV or buyout, it will be advantage Mukesh Ambani all the way.
