Trinamool demands Parliamentary meeting on Manipur

June 16, 2023 | < 1 min read

Trinamool Congress has demanded an urgent meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs to “understand the ground reality” about “the prevailing situation of violence in Manipur”.

Trinamool Congress has written to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs, demanding an “urgent need for a meeting” to “assess the prevailing situation of violence in Manipur and to stand by those affected by it”.

Ethnic violence in the north-eastern state between the tribal Kukis and majority Meities has led to more than 100 deaths over the last one-and-a-half months.

The letter describes the situation in short: Besides the deaths and displaced thousands, multiple churches have been vandalised, shoot-at-sight orders are in place, prices of essential commodities have shot up and long queues can be seen in front of ATMs and petrol pumps—in short, an atmosphere of fear paralysing normal life.

The meeting, the letter says, will help Parliament “understand the ground reality” through “first-hand insights into the situation”.
