At least nine people were shot dead in a border village of Manipur in the latest incident in weeks of violence, taking the death toll past 100.

The clashes between the predominantly Christian Kuki ethnic group, living in the hill areas of Manipur, and the predominantly Hindu Meiteis, occupying a much smaller area in the Imphal Valley, began on May 3 over a demand of the latter for scheduled tribe status, which the former vehemently opposes, fearing a takeover of jobs and other economic opportunities in the state as the latter form the majority of the population.

Besides the violence, many terrorist elements from among both the Meiteis and Kukis have stolen a lot of arms from police station, which is helping in the continuing of the armed violence.

Besides the deaths, many have been injured and many still have fled the state. A lot of people from both the communities are living in camps set up by the army and the police, but several camps have also been attacked.
