IRCTC provides travel insurance during e-ticket booking. Know the details

The IRCTC provides optional travel insurance of up to Rs 10 lakh per person against the payment of just 35 paise during the booking of e-tickets. Read the details here.

The Balasore train tragedy has brought into focus something many passengers ignore while booking tickets, or forget about even if they apply—which is, the travel insurance provided by IRCTC during the booking of e-tickets.

The Indian Railways offers a travel insurance scheme for a low cost of only 35 paise per passenger. Applying for it is optional, though. The traveller must select it at the time of booking.

According to the IRCTC website, the premium is 35 paise per passenger, inclusive of all taxes, with effect from November 1, 2021.

There are five types of benefits from the insurance, per the website. A crucial thing to remember is that, in order to encash it in case of any mishap which is covered under the insurance, the application needs to be made within four months of the incident, along with all relevant certificates and photos, to the nearest office of the insurance company.

The maximum benefit is Rs 10 lakh, which is applicable for death and permanent total disability. The latter includes incurable insanity, total loss of both limbs, total loss of sight in both eyes, total loss of sight in one eye and use of one limb, total loss of speech, permanent loss of hearing in both ears, total loss of mastication, complete removal of lower jaw, permanent total loss of the central nervous system and all abdominal organs resulting in the inability to carry on any work, and any other form of permanent total disablement.

Other amounts payable are:

  • 67% of the sum insured for the permanent total loss of one limb or one eye
  • 53% of the sum insured for the permanent total loss of use of four fingers and thumb of either hand
  • 33% of the sum insured for the permanent total loss of the lens in one eye
  • 27% of the sum insured for the permanent total loss of use of four fingers of either hand or one thumb of either hand, or of the loss of elbow, hip or knee
  • 20% of the sum insured for the permanent total loss of hearing in one ear or use of toes
  • 13% of the sum insured for the established non-union of fractured leg or knee cap
  • 10% of the sum insured for the shortening of leg by at least 5 cm
  • 7% of the sum insured for the permanent total loss of use of one finger of either hand
  • 20% of the sum insured, up to Rs 2 or Rs 10,000 for the transporting of mortal remains in case of death during the trip insured against
