The Kolkata Municipal Corporation is planning to build a set of toilets for women in every ward under it, following a survey among women shoppers and office-goers that showed an urgent need for toilets for them.

After getting feedback through a survey among women office-goers and shoppers about the lack of adequate clean and hygienic toilets, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has decided to construct, as well as maintain at its own cost, at least one toilet complex for women in each of the 144 wards.

A KMC official said the women-only toilets would initially come up at BBD Bag, Burrabazar, Esplanade, Ganesh Chandra Avenue, Camac Street, Russell Street, Park Circus, Gariahat, Lake Market and Prince Anwar Shah Road.

Each of these toilet complexes are being planned to be equipped with bathing-cum-changing rooms, feeding rooms, kids’ zone, ramps for easier accessibility as well as female security guards.
