18 lakhs jobs lost as compared to the previous month

There were 18 lakh less employed people in the country in October, as compared to September, which was the highest fall since April and May.

The figure was derived after considering the number of organisations and employees who did not contribute their share in the Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) in October, as compared to September.

In September, the number of people enrolled in the EPFO was 4,76,80,000, which came down to 4,58,20,000, a difference of around 18 lakh.

Similarly, the number of enrolled organisations reduced from 5,34,869 to 5,04,044, a difference of about 30,000.

May had witnessed the highest ever fall in employment in decades, but it was chalked up the effects of Covid and the lockdown. However, this sharp fall in October has led to experts commenting on the lack of vision in creating jobs by the Centre
