BJP lobbying fails, former governor loses Calcutta Club election
BJP leader from Bengal, Tathagata Roy, former governor of Tripura and Meghalaya, lost the election for the presidency of Calcutta Club on Saturday. Roy is a prominent Bengal BJP leader and was once the president of the state unit of the party.
Sources say that though it was an election for a social club, being one of the most prominent and storied clubs of the city, the BJP lobbied hard to convince the club members, albeit indirectly, to vote for its leader.
However, in the end, their efforts failed as Pramit Kumar Ray, a senior advocate at Calcutta High Court and a senior club member, was elected president.
This was the first time since independence that a former governor fought for the president’s post, according to a club member.
Sir Nripendra Narayan, the maharaja of Cooch Behar, was the first president of Calcutta Club, established in 1907.
