Founders of Kolkata-based media outlet Alt News in the running for Nobel Peace Prize

October 7, 2022 | < 1 min read

Just a few months back, a young journalist named Mohammed Zubair had become prime-time news after being arrested by Delhi Police. Who is Mohammed Zubair? He is one half of the co-founding duo of the well-known fact-checking website Alt News, now a Kolkata-based operation. The other co-founder is Pratik Sinha, originally from Ahmedabad, but partly a Bengali (through his father, his mother being a Gujarati).

In recognition of the stupendous work done by the portal in the last few years in busting numerous instances of fake news and fake messages, mostly related to India—spread through social media, mostly by the right-wing ecosystem—the duo of Pratik Sinha and Mohammed Zubair are being considered to be among the favourites for the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize. This was reported by the venerable Time magazine.

Sinha and Zubair have earned fame worldwide through their work in busting fake news, often targeting Muslims. The government has directed its might in various ways, directly and indirectly, to try to contain the duo, but their fearless work continues.

Alt News started in Ahmedabad, Gujarat but the company (Pravda Media Foundation is the parent company of Alt News) shifted to Kolkata later, setting up office in Alipore.
