Union Women and Child Development Minister and BJP’s Amethi MP, Smriti Irani and her family is in the eye of a storm after it came out that a restaurant owned by her daughter in Goa got its liquor licence renewed in the name of a dead person.

The BJP-run state’s excise and customs department has issued a show-cause notice to the restaurant, Silly Souls Bar & Restaurant, located in Assagao in northern Goa, which is owned by Zoish Irani.

Goa’s Excise Commissioner Narayan M Gad issued the show-cause notice on July 21, and the matter is scheduled to be heard in court on the 29th.

The notice was issued in response to a complaint lodged by lawyer Aires Rodrigues, saying Silly Souls Bar & Restaurant’s owners submitted “fraudulent and fabricated documents” to get the liquor licence renewed.

The involvement of the daughter of the high-profile BJP minister in the alleged crime has naturally led to the eruption of a political storm.
