Chidambaram and Jairam Ramesh to be re-elected to Rajya Sabha

The Congress party’s preparations for the June 10 Rajya Sabha elections are in full swing. Though the party is not in a very good state right now, it trying its best to get as many elected to the Upper House of Parliament as possible.

Elections will be held for 57 seats, spanning 15 states. They are extremely crucial considering that they come right ahead of the Presidential election in July.

A lot of speculation is going on regarding who all would get tickets from the grand old party. Some prominent members are going to be left out.

The current House has 29 Congress MPs, several of which seats would be going to the polls. According to political experts, Congress has a good chance to win 11 of the total of 57 seats for which elections would be held. If it wins 11, its membership would rise from 29 to 33.

In 2020, 23 prominent leaders had written to party chairperson Sonia Gandia about intra-party reforms. They have come to be known as the Group of 23 or G-23. The group’s letters and meetings have caused a lot of heartburn among the party’s leadership.

If rumours are to be believed, G-23 members would not be given tickets this time. Thet leaves prominent Rajya Sabha MPs Anand Sharma and Ghulam Nabi Azad out of the reckoning. Kapil Sibal has already joined Samajwadi Party.

What is sure is that veterans P Chidambaram and Jairam Ramesh, both considered close to the party high command, are going to be re-elected.

According to sources, the final list has already reached Rahul Gandhi. Once he gives the go-ahead, the names are going to be formalised on May 30.
